With adequate instruction and the necessary tools, DIY window tinting can easily be done to any vehicle.  Applying this specialized filming can reduce the heat and ultraviolet radiation entering the glass and provide protection to the car interior and passengers inside.  While it may seem like an expensive procedure, many can attempt DIY window tinting without much difficulty or expense and with many of the tools already on hand.

Prior to taking on such an intricate task, it is important to research the legality of the type of coverage that is intended.  The United States Department of Transportation sets restrictions for windshields and front side windows at a minimum of 70% visible light transmission.  This agency has not put in place any limitations on rear vehicle glass, yet individual state laws can vary from state to state.  Some states allow up to a 20% visible light transmission on the front side windows, while other laws have stricter regulations on such film.  It is crucial to ensure this investment is made carefully and will pay off in the long run without any legal issues.

The actual DIY window tinting process is fairly straightforward.  While some may prefer to leave the installation up to the pros, tackling the job at home can reduce the overall cost of this upgrade.  The main expense of this project will be in the tint film itself.  This can be purchased from a reputable online supplier that can assist in the proper selection for the job at hand.  It is important to know the exact dimensions needed as some film is available in pre-cut options.  Alternatively, it can be purchased by the roll and cut to fit each particular piece of glass.  In addition to the actual filming sheets, there are only a few necessary tools for this process including paper to make a pattern, razor blades or other sharp cutting tool, and a squeegee.

With the tools readily available, the steps for DIY window tinting are fairly simple.  The glass must be thoroughly cleaned using a multi-purpose glass cleaner.  This will ensure that there is no dirt or other residue on the surface area.  Next, the paper can be used to trace the exact perimeter of the glass to use as a pattern for cutting the actual film layers.  Using a sharp cutting tool, the paper must be cut to highlight any slight flaw in the glass to guarantee full coverage.  This pattern can now be used to carefully cut the filming.  If preferred, an extra one inch border can be left to allow for overlap and cut off following installation.  With the squeegee in hand, the film is to be applied starting at the bottom edge.  Slowly adhere the film all the way up the glass being sure to work out any bubbling that may appear between the product and the glass surface.  It’s as simple as that!!

In the end, any vehicle can be equipped to offer privacy as well as protection from the elements in a rather affordable way.  With the right amount of research and information, anyone can attempt a DIY window tinting project right in their own driveway.
